Southern Maryland Food and Farm Map

SMADC has partnered with Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future in their efforts to create a comprehensive, interactive food map of Southern Maryland. This is a unique new resource created to aid in improving local food systems by looking at the local food system geographically. Its goal is to spur improvements in the food system by helping people overcome obstacles and uncover new opportunities.

The current food system may contribute to diet-related disease, harmful environmental exposures, and unfair labor practices. By looking at the many different parts of the food system through a geographical lens, users can discover new ways to avoid these impacts and improve public health. Users can overlay data in various areas (agriculture, food distribution, income, health) for comparison. For example, a user might compare number of farms in a specific area with incidence of heart disease or diabetes, or overlay the schools with high incidences of free and reduced meals for students with stores and food distribution sites to identify areas of need for fresh food. The maps also show public transportation routes for the three southern counties.

How to use the map: Check the boxes of interest to you under the tab marked LAYERS at the top of the navagation panel to the left of the map. (Check multiple boxes to view overlapping layers of data.) Use your mouse and the plus and minus symbols in the upper left corner of the map window to pan and zoom. (On a mobile device, swipe and pinch to pan and zoom.) To see a symbol key and a breakdown of the color codes, click the LEGEND tab.

Sources for MAP data: SMADC is using GIS and other mapping technology to study the food system in Southern Maryland. The data are mostly from primary data collection, and also includes federal, state, and local government agencies, and project partners. To see a description/defination of each data layer along with a list of sources for that data layer, see this Map Data Source page.
